Short Hair With Big Beard?

By November 2, 2010

Follow me on:

Yesterday, I had two guys come in for haircuts. Both had large, bushy beards but wanted short, neat haircuts.  Neither would let me trim his beard at all. I've noticed this "face mullet" look on more and more guys lately and I think it simply does not work. My rule of thumb is this: the length of your beard should be as short or shorter than the length of the hair on the sides of your head -- unless you're participating in a fundraising event such as Movember. That's the only exception to that rule, in my opinion. What do you think?

I actually think a big beard with a short cut like a crewcut, shaved head or flattop is a hot look. Especially if the guy has a thick beard and a great stache.

I agree with Dave. However, this rule of thumb only applies to a professional environment like working in a corporate setting. When it comes to all else, everything goes. You have to remember that when it comes to fashion, it is only a reflection of yourself. Be creative.

If, as Oscar says, “everything goes,” then what’s the point of reading, writing or talking about fashion and hairstyles? It seems that we should limit our discourse to “that’s your style and this is mine; nothing more can be said.” I don’t think this is reasonable.

The important thing is to have the beard well groomed. My personal preference is for the shorter beard but there are some longer ones that look good because they are well-maintained.
