The votes are in! About.com readers nominated and voted for their favorite men's hair and shaving prodcuts in the 2012 About.com Readers' Choice Awards. Following are the winners:
Best Barbershop or Men's Salon
WINNER: Frank's Barbershop, Knoxville, Tennessee
At Frank's Barbershop in Knoxville, old-school barbering tradition merges with modern luxury. There are dark woods and leather surrounding you at every turn. While you wait, you can browse an impressive slection of products, or entertain yourself with darts, a game of pool, and a complimentary beverage. Haircuts are a resonable $25 while a classic face shave will set you back $30.
RUNNER UP: The Grooming Lounge, Washington, D.C.
Best Men's Pliable Styling Product
WINNER: Hanz de Fuko Quicksand
Now this is some interesting stuff. It's kinda gritty (sea salt) and does a great job of absorbing excess oil without being too heavy in the hair. With a matte finish, this product is perfect for creating edgy looks with volume and texture. This product also works well in hard to style fine hair.
RUNNER UP: American Crew Defining Paste
Best Men's Fixative Styling Product
WINNER: Hanz de Fuko Gel Triq
The guys at Hanz de Fuko make a mighty fine gel. I can't really say much about this product. It's gel. Works well, dries quickly, and won't flake. Definately a big step up from the cheap supermarket brands
RUNNER UP: TIGI B for Men Power Play
Best Anti-Dandruff Shampoo
WINNER: Head & Shoulders Hair Endurance for Men
Head & Shoulders Hair Endurance contains a hydrazinc formula which they guarantee will leave your hair looking fuller and thicker and 100% flake free. With a full money-back refund (up to $12.99), if I had dandruff, I would certainly give it a try.
RUNNER UP: American Crew Anti-Dandruff Shampoo
Best Men's Shampoo
WINNER: TOWELDRY Hydrating Shampoo
Most appropriate for guys with medium to normal hair, this product will clean and condition your hair without weighing it down. Pro-vitamin B5 adds thickness, body and shine, shea butter helps moisturize the scalp, and creatine and keratin strengthen the hair shaft. I also like that it is sulfate and paraban free.
RUNNER UP: Men-U Healthy Hair Shampoo
Best Men's Conditioner
WINNER: Hanz de Fuko Natural Conditioner
Okay, so I guess our readers think these guys make some great stuff. I would agree. Their Natural Conditioner does a great job of thickening the hair and leaving it soft and manageable. The all natural ingredients (including white tea, spearmint, pomegrante, acai, lemon, and avocado) sound almost edible (I don't recommend that, however). The product is also free of those nasty sulfates and papabens, so that's a plus.
RUNNER UP: Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Conditioner
Best Razor (Electric)
WINNER: Philips Norelco SensoTouch 3D
This shaver has three shaving surfaces on a unique floating head which follows the contour of your face quite well. It is cordless and rechargable (a charge takes about an hour) and has a touch-screen display which indicates when it is time to charge, clean, and replace the heads. It can also be used wet or dry.
RUNNER UP: Braun Series 7 Pulsonic Shaver System
Best Razor (Wet Shaving)
WINNER: The Bluebeards Revenge Scimitar Double Edge Razor
This is your traditional double-edge razor (similiar to my wonderful Merkur Classic). The design is beautiful and the razor accepts most traditional double-edge blades (available at most supermarkets and drug stores). If you wanna go old school with your shaving, this is the way to do it.
RUNNER UP: Gillette Fusion ProGlide
Best Shaving Cream
WINNER: men-u Ultra Concentrated Shave Cream
This is some pretty amazing stuff in a small package. It can be used with the fingers or a brush and does a fine job of lubricating the skin and allowing for a smooth, irritation-free shave. What makes this product especially unique is the highly concentrated formula. The manufacturer claims you can get nearly 6 months of shaves from one 3.3 ounce bottle. While I've never tested that particular claim, I have used the product and can certainly agree that a very little goes a long way.
RUNNER UP: The Bluebeards Revenge Shaving Cream
Best Hair Clipper
WINNER: Andis Improved Master
This clipper is the standard adjustable blade clipper used by the majority of barbers I know. Indeed, I have been using the Andis Master for over two decades and I simply won't use anything else. It is highly durable and powerful and will give you years of service. I have a set of these that is over 15 years old and it still works like it was new.
