The votes are in! About.com readers nominated and voted for their favorite men's hair and shaving prodcuts in the 2013 About.com Readers' Choice Awards for Men's Hair. Check out some of these seriously great products. Following are the winners:
Best Barbershop or Men's Salon
WINNER: Frank's Barbershop, Knoxville, Tennessee
Frank's wins for the third year in a row! At Frank's Barbershop in Knoxville, old-school barbering tradition merges with modern luxury. There are dark woods and leather surrounding you at every turn. While you wait, you can browse an impressive slection of products, or entertain yourself with darts, a game of pool, and a complimentary beverage. Haircuts are a resonable $25 while a classic face shave will set you back $30.
RUNNER UP: Baxter Finley, Los Angeles, California
Best Men's Pliable Styling Product
WINNER: TOWELDRY Paste Styler
This product offers extra firm hold with a quick (almost too quick) set up. For guys with thick, coarse, or curly hair, this is a solid option to beat your hair into submission. As a low-shine product, this is good stuff for textured, casual styles.
RUNNER UP: Hairbond Moulder
Best Men's Fixative Styling Product
WINNER: Woody's Mega Firm Gel
This is gel. Firm gel. I can't really say much more about it. The stuff works well, dries quickly, and won't flake. Definately a big step up from the cheap supermarket brands.
RUNNER UP: Hanz de Fuko Gel Triq
Best Anti-Dandruff Shampoo
WINNER: Head & Shoulders Hair Endurance for Men
A winner for the third year in a row, Head & Shoulders Hair Endurance contains a hydrazinc formula which they guarantee will leave your hair looking fuller and thicker and 100% flake free. With a full money-back refund (up to $12.99), if I had dandruff, I would certainly give it a try.
RUNNER UP: American Crew Anti-Dandruff Shampoo
Best Men's Shampoo
WINNER: TOWELDRY Hydrating Shampoo
Second time around for TOWELDRY in this category. Most appropriate for guys with medium to normal hair, this product will clean and condition your hair without weighing it down. Pro-vitamin B5 adds thickness, body and shine, shea butter helps moisturize the scalp, and creatine and keratin strengthen the hair shaft. I also like that it is sulfate and paraban free.
RUNNER UP: Woody's Daily Shampoo
Best Men's Conditioner
WINNER: Hanz de Fuko Natural Conditioner
Okay, so I guess our readers think these guys make some great stuff. I would agree. Their Natural Conditioner does a great job of thickening the hair and leaving it soft and manageable. The all natural ingredients (including white tea, spearmint, pomegrante, acai, lemon, and avocado) sound almost edible (I don't recommend that, however). The product is also free of those nasty sulfates and papabens, so that's a plus.
RUNNER UP:Woody's Daily Conditioner
Best Razor (Electric)
WINNER: Philips Norelco SensoTouch 3D
This shaver has three shaving surfaces on a unique floating head which follows the contour of your face quite well. It is cordless and rechargable (a charge takes about an hour) and has a touch-screen display which indicates when it is time to charge, clean, and replace the heads. It can also be used wet or dry.
RUNNER UP:Panasonic ES8243A Men's 4 Blade Electric Shaver
Best Razor (Wet Shaving)
WINNER: The Merkur Hefty Classic Razor
Merkur Heavy Duty Classic is an old-school razor that uses double edge (DE) blades for a close shave. The design is beautiful and the razor accepts most traditional double-edge blades (available at most supermarkets and drug stores). If you wanna go old school with your shaving, this is the way to do it. Before you do, check out my tutorial on shaving with a double-edge raozr.
RUNNER UP: Tie: Gillette Fusion ProGlide and Gillette Mach III
Best Shaving Cream
My readers and I agree completely on this one. Dreadnought Shaving Cream is what I use every day as I consider it among the best creams I've ever tried. Great lather and lubrication make this an excellent choice. Due to a pesky trademark issue, they were prohibited from selling the stuff in the United States. Luckily, they found a workaround and are now selling the product in the United States under the brand name Dreadnought Shaving (pronounced dred-nowt) -- it was formerly known in the states as Bluebeard's Revenge.
RUNNER UP: Taylor of Old Bond Street Lavender Shaving Cream
Best Hair Clipper
WINNER: Andis Improved Master
Another product I use every day -- this clipper is the gold standard adjustable blade clipper used by the majority of barbers I know. Indeed, I have been using the Andis Master for over two decades and I simply won't use anything else. It is highly durable and powerful and will give you years of service. I have a set of these that is over 15 years old and it still works like it was new.
RUNNER UP: Wahl Senior
