A Review of the Rolling Razor

The Bottom Line

Because only one of the three blades is in contact with the skin at once (therefore eliminating the "lift and cut" effect of most triple blade razors), this razor may provide relief for those with sensitive skin.

For most men, however, I think the design of the razor may be a bit too much of a departure from the traditional stick. If I were a regular head shaver, I could see this becoming my primary razor, but for shaving my face it's not going to replace my Gillette Mach 3 anytime soon.

If you're willing to spend the $14 for something new, give it a try. If you're happy with your current shave, skip it.

Pros

  • Unique design for natural motion.
  • Blade design allows for access to tight spaces (under nose, lip, etc.)
  • Design of razor helps prevent using too much pressure.
  • Great design for head shavers.
  • Very good shave cream.

Cons

  • Shave not as close as other triple blade razors.
  • Blade removal buttons awkward for removing just one blade.
  • Frequent clogging of blades reduces performance.
  • Could not discern difference between regular and sensitive blades.
  • Pricey blades, not available in stores.

Description

  • Unique razor design allows for a faster shave using a very natural motion.
  • Exceptionally good companion products that I could recommend even without the razor.
  • The Rolling Razor (and blades) are not available in stores. Purchasing requires a trip to their website.
  • Innovative storage base works well, but looks cheap.
  • Four different types of cartridges (normal, sensitive, extra sensitive, bump fighter) - but I can't tell the difference.

Guide Review - A Review of the Rolling Razor

When a buddy gave me a Rolling Razor to try, I expected to completely hate the thing. In reality, there were several things I actually liked about the razor and it did give me a fairly close, irritation free shave. Having tried nearly every razor imaginable, I still find the Gillette Mach 3 Turbo to be the best razor available (it would be flawless if Gillette would put a single blade on the flip side like they did with the Fusion).

To shave with this thing, you place your index finger into the cylinder and wrap your thumb and middle finger around the handle. This allows you to "roll" the razor around your finger. The rounded blades roll across the skin as you rotate the razor around your finger and provides a very smooth motion. It sounds a bit awkward, but it actually feels fairly natural. I got the hang of it quickly and shaving was quite easy. Of course, so is shaving with a standard stick razor with a pivoting head.

I did appreciate the fact that the curved blade design made it very easy to shave under my nose and lips (places that are a bit hard to navigate with my Mach 3) and stroking under the chin was a breeze as well. The design of the razor promotes a "with the grain and then against the grain" shaving technique of which I'm not a fan. Shaving against the grain, for many, will promote irritation and ingrown hairs and is normally not necessary.

While I thought the shaving products from Rolling Razor were quite good, I found the overall shave was not as close or comfortable as I've received from other razors. The packaging claims it's a "true shaving revolution," but I think some revolutions aren't always necessary and such is the case with Rolling Razor. I won't recommend against purchasing one, but I'm not overly excited about it either. If you're a gadget guy like me, give it a shot. You may like it.
