Kyle is going to spend a quarter abroad, so he needed a short cut that was versatile and would grow out well during his trip. For this style, I cut the hair aggressively short (a #2 blade) high up the sides and back of the head. We left the top about 2 1/2 inches long to give Kyle some styling options -- he can either wear the top down or push it up with a little product. I really like how the style frames his face -- the clean lines and tight taper at the back combined with a little texture on top offer a nice contrast.

This is a super easy style to achieve. On damp hair, I used a pea-sized amount of Redken for Men Working Wax. Rub the wax between the palms of your hands to break it up and work it into the hair using a shampooing motion. Using fingers, push the hair up and move it around a bit until you get the shape and texture you want.

Advice

  • Don't be afraid to go for an aggressively "messy" texture on top -- the sharp, clean cut sides will still give the style a groomed look.
