Get a New Look and Help Some Great Causes

By

The simple act of getting a haircut can save a life, give a child new confidence, or even help clean up an oil spill. There are several hair related charities -- these are a few of my favorites.

St. Baldrick's Foundation
The St. Baldrick's foundation is an organization focused on raising awareness and funds to help cure kids' cancer. They do this by sponsoring St. Baldrick's Celebrations in which individuals accept donations for agreeing to shave their head if they reach a monetary goal. As the world's largest volunteer-driven fundraising event for childhood cancer research, The St. Baldrick's Foundation has raised over $90 million dollars and shaved more than 140,000 heads in their quest to beat kids' cancer. The St. Baldrick's events are always a blast -- they're a fun way to help out a wonderful organization. I think every guy should shave his head at least once in a lifetime and I can't think of a better excuse -- to be a "shavee" and become a walking billboard for the cause of childhood cancer research.

Movember
Movember's goal is to change the face of men's health (literally) by challenging men to grow a moustache during the month of November. Instead of wearing a ribbon, the moustache is the means by which the Movember Foundation raises awareness and funds for the Prostate Cancer Foundation and LIVESTRONG. Grow your 'stache for 30 days and ask people to donate to Movember on your behalf. This is also a fun team event, so get the whole office or baseball team involved. Surf over to the Movember Website for more information and to sign up.

Locks of Love
For a child, losing one's hair due to an illness can be a tremendous blow to the confidence and self-esteem and make it difficult to face their peers. Locks of Love is a non-profit group that provides hairpieces to financially challenged children. If you've got long hair and are thinking about taking the plunge and going short, consider donating your hair to Locks of Love. To donate, you must have at least 10 inches of hair which must be cut off in a ponytail. I recommend having the hair cut professionally and most salons or barbershops will likely provide the service for free if you mention you're donating to Locks of Love. Be sure to check out the Locks of Love website for donating guidelines before you cut it off.

Matter of Trust
Matter of Trust is a unique organization that works with salons that donate their hair clippings to create hair mats to soak up oil spills. This may sound a bit odd, but according to Matter of Trust, last year over 2,600 oil spills occurred around the world. The hair mats adsorb the oil (the oil clings to the hair, as opposed to being soaked up or absorbed) thus making cleanup of the spills easier. If you're a salon, barbershop, or pet groomer, consider sending your clippings to Matter of Trust and help a unique organization with an amazing mission.
